An early 19th Century pearlware lustre jug, circa 1812, of lobed ogee form, relief moulded with profile bust portraits of Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Leopold under a border of stylised flower heads and leaves, picked out in coloured enamels, height 16cm.

Princess Charlotte of Wales and Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld were married on May 2, 1816, in a highly celebrated royal wedding at Carlton House in London. Their union was regarded as a genuine love match, unusual for royal marriages of the time, and was met with widespread public enthusiasm. Charlotte, the only child of the Prince Regent (later King George IV), was the heir presumptive to the British throne, making the marriage politically significant. Leopold, a German prince, was considered cultured, intelligent, and gentle -qualities that endeared him to both Charlotte and the British public. The couple’s marriage was brief but reportedly very happy. Tragically, Charlotte died in childbirth in 1817 at the age of 21, along with their stillborn son, plunging the nation into deep mourning. Her death had profound consequences for the British royal succession and ultimately led to the rise of her cousin, Queen Victoria.
