An early 19th Century Staffordshire lustre jug, transfer printed with satirical cartoons after Cruickshank depicting the Prince Regent and Lady Hertford titled ‘A Visit to Carlton House’ with a lady in a ‘contraption’ verso titled ‘The Ladys Accelerator’, picked out in colours below a hand painted border, height 11cm.

Isabella Ingram-Seymour-Conway, Marchioness of Hertford (1759–1834), was a prominent English aristocrat who became the intimate companion and possibly the mistress of George IV during his tenure as Prince of Wales. Their relationship began around 1807, after the Prince had separated from his previous confidante, Maria Fitzherbert.  The Marchioness's influence extended beyond personal matters; she also played a role in shaping the Prince's political decisions. Her Tory sympathies were reflected in her efforts to steer the Prince away from Whig associations, aligning him more closely with Tory politics. This alignment was evident in her social gatherings, which served as informal Tory salons, and in her influence over the Prince's political appointments and policies.
