A Copeland Spode royal commemorative tyg, 1937, to mark the occasion of the Coronation of Edward VIII, printed decoration including Royal portraits within crowned cartouche flanked by standard bearing knights, Britannia and the Royal Coat of Arms, titled band to rim, and meandering English rose, printed marks to base and No.28, height 14.5cm.

On 10 December 1936, King Edward VIII became the first British monarch to voluntarily abdicate the throne. His decision was driven by his desire to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, which was met with opposition from the British government and the Church of England. Edward's abdication was formalised the following day through the passage of the His Majesty's Declaration of Abdication Act 1936, which was enacted by Parliament and received royal assent on 11 December 1936. This legislation not only recognized Edward's abdication but also ensured that any descendants from his union with Wallis would have no claim to the throne. The planned coronation of King Edward VIII on 12 May 1937 was a significant event in British history, not only for its political implications but also for the extensive commemorative ware produced in anticipation of the ceremony. Despite Edward's abdication in December 1936, numerous items were manufactured to celebrate the coronation that never occurred.
