An mid 19th Century Staffordshire earthenware royal commemorative jug, of octagonal shouldered form, with flared rim and serpent handle, printed and colourwashed decoration depicting 'Princess Royal, Prince of Prussia' with image of a royal residence to reverse within squiggle blue and copper lustre border, height 17cm.

Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, married Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. As a result, she became Princess Frederick of Prussia, and later German Empress and Queen of Prussia when her husband became Kaiser Frederick III in 1888. Their marriage was both a personal union and a political alliance, intended to strengthen ties between Britain and Prussia. Their son, Wilhelm II, would later become the last German Emperor, leading Germany through World War I. Victoria was an intelligent and progressive woman who tried to promote liberal values in the conservative Prussian court.
