A pair of Flight, Barr and Barr cabinet cups and stands signed by Thomas Baxter, circa 1814-1816 with twin gilded handled and broad everted rims, each decorated with the famous Medieval romantic figures Heloise and Abelard, she holding a letter with one hand raised, he reading a letter, to the reverse of each a panel of flowers within jewelled borders and reserved on a blue ground with neoclassical ornament, a band of applied white pearls below the rims and around the well of the stands, Heloise's cup with lines from Alexander Pope's poem Heloise to Abelard, Abelard cup with lines from James Cawthorne's poem, impressed crown and FBB marks, printed and script marks referring to Coventry Street address, one also signed with the initials TB.

NB - This shape of cabinet cup was particularly favoured by Thomas Baxter, who worked for Flight, Barr and Barr from 1814-16. Few signed examples from this period are known. The figure of Abelard may be a likeness of Baxter himself.
