A late 18th Century Staffordshire Pearlware Royal commemorative jug, circa 1793, of bellied form, relief moulded with profile bust portrait of Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, the reverse with portraits of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and Louis XVII, in moulded roundels within brick red field and moulded leaves above fluted band, height 16.5cm.
Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1763–1827), was the second son of King George III and a prominent British military leader. Known as the “Soldier’s Friend,” he played a significant role in the British Army during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Despite some setbacks in his military career, the Duke of York worked to reform the army and improve conditions for soldiers. His dedication to military service and reform left a lasting impact on the British armed forces. He never married and died without legitimate heirs, but his legacy remains tied to his efforts to modernize the British Army..
