An early 19th Century Staffordshire pearlware royal commemorative blue and white jug, circa 1810, transfer printed with seated figures, George III and Queen Charlotte, the reverse with their sons, Prince Adolphus (Duke of Cambridge) and the Duke of York, with cannon, flags and titled banners, below band of geometric motifs and Prince of Wales feathers, height 17cm.

Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, and Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, were both sons of King George III of the United Kingdom, part of a large royal family that played significant roles in British military and political life during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Prince Frederick, Duke of York, possibly inspiration for the nursery rhyme 'The Grand Old Duke of York', was a senior military leader during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Though he experienced some early military setbacks, he is largely credited with major reforms that professionalised the British Army, improving discipline, training, and administration.

Prince Adolphus pursued a distinguished military and administrative career. He served in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars and later governed the Kingdom of Hanover on behalf of his royal brothers. He married Princess Augusta of Hesse-Kassel and had three children, including Prince George, 2nd Duke of Cambridge, who later became a prominent Victorian-era army commander.
