£50
An Edward VIII Abdication beaker, of ribbed ovoid form, the original 1937 Coronation beaker with additional script by Queen Mary dated 12.12.1936 'Ever keep a grateful memory of my dear son in your hearts', marked 'Official design of the British Pottery Manufacturers Association', height 11cm.
Edward VIII’s planned coronation was scheduled for 12 May 1937, but it never took place because he abdicated in December 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson. Commemorative items like coronation beakers were already produced in anticipation of the event. After the abdication, official coronation memorabilia for Edward VIII were quickly withdrawn or altered to reflect the new monarch, George VI.
