An early 19th Century Goodwin, Bridgwood & Harris Pottery jug, circa 1830, of compressed baluster footed form, black printed George IV commemorative bust portrait and inscribed 'TO THE MEMORY OF HIS LATE MAJESTY KING GEORGE IV', height 12cm.
King George IV died on June 26, 1830, at Windsor Castle at the age of 67. His health had been deteriorating for many years due to obesity, gout, and complications from a lavish lifestyle marked by overindulgence in food, drink, and laudanum (an opium-based painkiller).
By the time of his death, George IV was deeply unpopular with much of the public. Though he had once been celebrated for his style and patronage of the arts — particularly during his time as Prince Regent (1811–1820) — his later reign was overshadowed by personal excess, political conservatism, and a poor public image.
He was succeeded by his brother William IV, as George had no legitimate surviving children. The passing of George IV also marked a shift in the monarchy, with his successor taking a more modest and publicly approachable role.
