Kisfaludi Sigismund de Strobl, for Wedgwood, an earthenware bust portrait of Princess Elizabeth, aged 9 years, on square base, moonstone glaze and impressed artist's signature under collar, height 29cm.
Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, a Hungarian sculptor, created a notable portrait bust of Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) in 1935, when she was nine years old. This marble bust, completed in 1937, became one of the most enduring images of the young princess and was later reproduced in porcelain. The original sculpture is part of The Royal Collection.
Kisfaludi Strobl, who maintained a studio in London from 1931 to 1939, was a prominent portraitist of the British elite and royal family during this period. His works were well-received, and he had a personal meeting with George Bernard Shaw in his studio, as documented in a 1937 British Pathé newsreel
In addition to the bust, Kisfaludi Strobl created a full-length equestrian statue of Princess Elizabeth, which was presented to her in 1963. The original bronze version of this statue was later displayed at Buckingham Palace.
Some crazing but no damage, condition commensurate with age and wear.
