A late 18th Century Staffordshire creamware political/social commemorative tankard, circa 1793, of cylinder form with loop handle, transfer printed to one side with British Liberty and opposing French Liberty each with satirical comments below, titled 'The Contrast 1793 Which is Best', after a cartoon by Rowlandson, height 14.5cm.

"The Contrast 1793: British Liberty and French Liberty – Which is Best?" is a satirical print created by Thomas Rowlandson in 1793, reflecting the political tensions between Britain and revolutionary France.

The print was produced during a period of heightened political unrest in Britain, as revolutionary fervor in France led to fears of similar uprisings. It was published by the Association for Preserving Liberty and Property against Republicans and Levellers, a group aiming to counteract radicalism and promote loyalty to the British constitution. The image was widely distributed, often displayed in public spaces to influence public opinion
